I am Gerard Stott, working as the Artist at Garage 10. I am a painter working in oil, creating images involving both still life and composed and explored subjects.
I appreciate investment and care in the craft of painting and believe that this needs to be balanced across conception, composition and execution .
I find absorption and a genuine positive sense of recreation from the act of painting and I’m deeply fascinated by the processes that leads to my next work.
Re-sketching subjects over and over again, many times, and over some time, allows concepts to take on their own identity within a composition.
These then; can evolve together, either developing or disappearing and through this process, I discover what I will paint.
My work is ultimately self indulgence, and I paint to please myself. However I hope that the work I end up with has some validity and can stand on it's own.
Given that my subjects often evolve significantly during various stages thoughout the process, it ocurrs to me that the process is possibly allowing for
enough time for a less consious theme to make it's self apparent and for it to establish some independent control over what I had thought I was working on.
I'm always happy to talk about my work, but what other people make of it, has to remain personal to them and I don't want to affect their impressions.
Discussing what I might have originally thought to be an element of one of my subjects in any depth, can only be for entertainment and is probably counterintuitive
I am an Aberdeen Artists Society member and have collaborated on the council for around 10 years and contribute to most AAS exhibitions.
I participate in North East Open Studios (NEOS) most years and I have exhibited in the RSA a couple of times.
